Australia has a New World Champion
Daniel Gurr Crowned Winner of STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Rookie World Championship!
From Deloraine, Tasmania to the world stage in Marseille, France – Aussie Daniel Gurr, 21 years old, has been declared the World Champion at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Rookie World Championship overnight in front of thousands of fans from around the world. Daniel took out the title after accumulating the most points performing four wood chopping disciplines against the best young athletes from all over the world, who put on a fine showcase of The Original Extreme Sport.
In four exciting rounds Daniel chopped and sawed four blocks of wood into sawdust in a combined time of 1:00:20 seconds, achieving a total 23 points to claim the coveted title. It came down to a thrilling final heat where Daniel was trailing Italy’s Michael Del Pin by 3 point. Daniel had to take 1st place in the Underhand chop and hope the Italian finished in 4th place or lower. Daniel smashed his Personal best to take maximum points, Del Pin fell .30 seconds short of taking the gold – making Daniel the first Australian to win the title of Rookie World Champion!
Daniel, a second-generation woodchopper, was thrilled with his performance and the result: “I’m stoked, an Australian has never won the Rookie title before! Today’s result makes me the best STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Rookie globally, and I’m honoured to have represented my county and made my Mum, Dad, and all the woodchoppers in Australia proud. It’s been a huge couple of months back home, I was hospitalised with an illness before I came to France, and I’m so glad all the hard work paid off in the end.” Daniel had to compete against the best rookie athletes in the sport, including favourites Chas Haas and Thomas Henderson from the US and Canada.
The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Rookie World Championship sees eight of the best up and coming young athletes perform four disciplines in separate rounds against the clock, with the fastest time getting eight points, and the slowest getting one. Once everyone has performed the four disciplines, the athlete with the most cumulative points wins. The four disciplines in order are Stocksaw, Underhand Chop, Single Buck and Standing Block Chop.

- Stocksaw: 5th Place // 12.50sec // 4 points
- Standing Block: 1st Place // 16.20sec // 8 points
- Single Buck: 6th Place // 13.56sec // 3 points
- Underhand Chop: 1st Place // 17.94sec // 8 points.

Joining Daniel in France was Queenslander Mitch Argent, 24 years old, who represented Australia in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Champions Trophy against twelve of the best Timbersports Athletes from around the world. Mitch set the fastest time of the competition, and finished in 3rd Place.
Hundreds of fans enjoyed the high energy, action-packed entertainment in front of the iconic MuCEM building next to Marseille’s harbour.
