Australia’s Mitch Argent Places 3rd in STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Champions Trophy
From Blackbutt, Queensland to the world stage in Marseille, France – Aussie Mitch Argent, 24 years old and the youngest competitor in the competition, has given his all at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Champions Trophy overnight and set the fastest time of the competition on his way to 3rd place, in front of thousands of fans. Mitch reached the pinnacle of the sport to compete against twelve elite athletes from all over the world who put on a fine showcase of the Original Extreme Sport.
Queenslander Mitch Argent showed true Aussie spirit on the way to 3rd place in his first global championship. After placing 4th place in the time trial Mitch then took on Polish Competitor Michael Dubicki in the quarter final finishing in 58.12 – just .30 seconds off the world record, and a new PB.
Mitch then came up against last year’s runner up Stirling Hart from Canada in the semi final. After a thrilling roller coaster of a heat where by each competitor took the lead, Mitch clawed back a 4 hit defective on the final discipline to finish just one hit and .8 seconds short.
In his final round, Mitch then took on Martin Komerak from the Czech Republic in the 3rd place playoff. Once again Mitch showed true Aussie grit to beat Europe’s most dominant competitor for the past 10 years.
Mitch finished in 3rd position. Stirling Hart from Canada took out the global title with a time of 1:03.40 against nine-time world champion, Jason Wynyard from New Zealand. Hart won the Champions Trophy title for the 1st time, ending Australia’s 4-year dominance.
Mitch was happy with his performance and the result: “I did my best and am happy with today’s result, it’s been a huge couple of months and I’m keen to come back next year, better and stronger.”
Mitch was pleased with his performance and the opportunity to compete on the global stage. “There was tough competition all round – everywhere I looked there was another STIHL Timbersports legend or national champion and to be around the same level as some of these blokes is huge. I wasn’t able to get the win this time but I’m glad I had the chance to come out here and compete against these guys, and hopefully take my skills to the next level.”
The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Champions Trophy is the ultimate endurance format of the sport, where athletes have to compete in four disciplines back to back in a one-man relay. The four disciplines in order are Stocksaw, Underhand Chop, Single Buck and Standing Block Chop, athletes run from one discipline to the next in a head to head knockout system.
Mitch had to compete against the best athletes in the sport, and in particular Jason Wynyard from New Zealand who has been competing in STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® longer than any other athlete. Canadian Stirling Hart and Czech Martin Komarek were two of the other hot favourites amongst the competition.

Joining Mitch in France was Tasmanian Daniel Gurr, 21 years old, who has been declared the World champion at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Rookie World Championship. He competed in the Rookie Champions Trophy against eight of the best youngsters around the world and took out the title after accumulating the most points performing four wood chopping disciplines.
Hundreds of fans enjoyed the high energy, action-packed entertainment in front of the iconic MuCEM building next to Marseille’s beautiful harbour.
