The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series is excited to announce that The Original Extreme Sport will be returning to the Gold Coast, this time at Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach.

This iconic Broadbeach location will be the backdrop for the main event of the Australian Series, with the Rookie & Pro championships confirmed for Saturday 17th September 2022.

In a day of high-powered, high-octane extreme sports action, our nation’s best will be battling it out with razor sharp axes and high-powered saws for the 2022 Australian Rookie Champion and the 2022 Pro Australian Champion crowns.

The axe-ion will start at Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach from 12pm 17th September (AEST) with the Australian Rookie Championship showcasing the sports best up and coming talent in the under 25 division. The top 6 Rookie athletes will battle it out in 5 disciplines this year with a new discipline, the One Board Tree, added to the line-up. The other disciplines featured include the Underhand Chop, STIHL Stock Saw, Standing Block Chop and the Single Buck.

The Pro Championship is the showpiece competition of the Australian series, with athletes competing across all six STIHL TIMBERPSORTS® disciplines in a three-round, points-based knock-out system.

The Top 12 Pro athletes will complete in the first three disciplines (the Underhand Chop, the STIHL Stock Saw and the Standing Block Chop), with 12 points awarded to the fastest athlete, and 1 for the slowest.

After the three disciplines, only the top eight athletes will go on to the next two disciplines: the Single Buck, and the crowd favourite, the Springboard.

Points will now double with 16 going to the fastest athlete, and 2 to the slowest.

Before the final event, the Hot Saw, we will lose another two athletes, leaving the top six to shoot it out for triple points with their custom-made monster chainsaws!

The main event of the day, the Pro Championship, will start at around approximately 2.30pm, with the supporting festival continuing until 8pm with food trucks, music and a licensed bar. Thanks to the support of the City of Gold Coast (cityofgoldcoast.com.au), entry is free!

MEYER THE MAN TO BEAT!

Last year the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Pro Australian Championship could not go ahead due to border closures and lockdowns across the country, but Victorian Brayden Meyer will be back this year to defend his title after taking out 1st place two years in a row in the 2019 Pro Australian Championship & the Virtual Championship which was held in 2020. Meyer is ready for this year’s competition and is one of the favourites to take home the win!

“I have recently moved with my family to Kingsthorpe, Queensland and started my training for this year’s Championship in my new training area. There will definitely be added pressure to take home the win this year after not competing in this format for nearly 2 years but I am ready for it. Laurence and Brad will be tough competition this year, along with Mitch Argent who is coming back after an injury, but I’m looking forward to competing in front of a live crowd on the Gold Coast,” said Meyer.

Fellow Chopperoos Brad De Losa, Laurence O’Toole, Mitch Argent & Glen Gillam will all be looking to knock Meyer from the top spot and claim their ticket to the 2022 World Championships to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden on the 28th & 29th October, but Meyer is ready for the challenge.

WHO WILL BE CROWNED 2022 ROOKIE CHAMPION!

After two years of non-competition, the Australian Rookie Championship is back.

All competitors contested a qualification round, with 11 Rookie athletes competing in 5 disciplines across 4 states – QLD, NSW, VIC & TAS – from mid-June to mid-July.

The top 6 athletes from the qualification round have now qualified to compete in the 2022 Rookie Championship, which will be staged ahead of the Pro Championship on the Gold Coast.

Throughout qualification Curtis Bennett & Matt Coffey dominated the leader board, placing 1st and 2nd in the overall qualification round.

Bennett and Coffey are top of the game at the moment, but hot on their tails are newcomers Mitch Scrivener, who took the fastest time of the day in the Single Buck, and Will Lovell, who placed first in the One Board Tree with a very impressive time of 37.81 seconds.

With this year’s addition of the One Board Tree to the program, anyone could be crowned Rookie Champion.

The Pro Championship is a three round competition comprising of six STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® wood chopping & sawing disciplines.

Round 1:
We start the day with 12 athletes. All complete the first three disciplines (the Underhand Chop, the STIHL Stock Saw and the Standing Block Chop) with 12 points awarded to the fastest athlete and 1 for the slowest.

Round 2:
After the three disciplines, only the top eight athletes will go on to the next two disciplines: the Single Buck, and the crowd favourite, the Springboard. Points will now double with 16 going to the fastest athlete and 2 to the slowest.

Round 3:
Before the final event, the Hot Saw, we will lose another two athletes, leaving the top six to shoot it out for triple points with their custom-made monster chainsaws!

After round 3, the athlete with the most points is crowned the Pro Australian Champion and wins the honour of representing Australia at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® World Championship.

Five athletes will all also form the Chopperoos Team to compete in the Team World Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden on the 28th & 29th of October 2022. They will be up against the best European athletes as well as New Zealand, Canadian & American athletes.

HOW THE ROOKIE CHAMPIONSHIP WILL WORK:

The Rookie Championship includes four of the six STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® wood chopping & sawing disciplines, with wood sizes slightly smaller than the Pro championship. Athletes compete in all four disciplines and points are awarded based on times. The fastest athlete in each discipline will receive 6 points and the slowest 1 point. At the end of the four discipline program, the winner is the athlete with the highest point total. The winner of the Rookie Australian Championship will win the honour of representing Australia at the 2023 Rookie World Championship. The Rookie World Championship is held in Europe each May/June.
