It might not be that practical to go out and buy real flowers for Mum this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spoil her with a little DIY project instead! Our four step guide to make your own wooden flowers is incredibly simple, and only requires some tree branches, a chainsaw and some superglue, so you can treat Mum without leaving the house this year!

STEP 1: Collect your materials

To create the centre of the flower, you will need a nice round log which approximately 10-15cm in diameter. To create the petals, stem and leaf, you will need a branch with a diameter that is roughly half that size, approximately 5-7cm, and roughly 1 meter in length.

These measurements are just guidelines. You can easily make a larger or smaller flower than the one we have instructed, just make sure the width of the log used to create the petals is half the size of the centerpiece.

STEP 2: Cut your materials

Firstly you will need to cut your centerpiece. This should be no thicker than 1cm, anything too heavy will be tricky to stand up once you’re done! Follow by cutting five smaller discs using the branch to create the petals.

For the stem, you’ll need to cut your branch length ways to your desired height. To make the leaf, for your stem, simply fix your branch to your sawhorse, and cut it on an angle to create an elongated shape.

STEP 3: Put it all together

Now it’s time to piece your flower together! Start by fixing the petals to the back of the centerpiece, leaving a small gap and the bottom for the stem. Leave to set for a few hours to ensure the pieces are completely fixed before standing to attach the stem. At the same time, fix the leaf to the back of the stem and leave to set until secure. Once you’re comfortable that all pieces are fixed together, finish your masterpiece by attaching the stem to the back of the centerpiece.

STEP 4: Make it personal!

Now that your creation resembles a real life flower, it’s time to add a personal touch to it. Paint the stem green and the petals Mum’s favourite colours before gifting!
